About us

Henry’s Diner has been a landmark in the heart of downtown Burlington for more than ninety years.

Henry Couture opened Henry’s Diner in June 1925. The railroad dining car was brought from Mahoney’s in Bayonne, NJ. The original Henry’s had a

curved roof which was a variation from the usual flat-top cars. There was a long counter with the cooking area in front. In those days the churches and “polite”

society looked down their noses at diners. Even the City Fathers gave Henry a hard time before granting him a license. Ladies never stepped inside a diner.

Henry changed the image of the dining car. He put window boxes out front and attached gaily striped awnings. Special feminine frills were added to the menu

such as waffles, frankfurts and hamburger on bread that was toasted daintily on one side. Henry won the hearts of the ladies and became the fashionable place to dine for scions on the hill and for ordinary working folk. In June of 1935 under the management of Frank Goldstein the west wall was opened to provide room for more booths. In 1958 the kitchen area was expanded and more dining space was added. A severe fire on Labor Day, September 1, 1969 forced co-owners Frank and Roberta Goldstein to close Henry’s temporarily. In spite of the extensive damage

they decided to rebuild. Every effort was made to preserve the imitable charm of Henry’s. Improvements such as acoustical ceilings, modern equipment, an attractive décor and soft background music to enhance the warm intimacy that has always been associated with this home away from home. Henry’s re-opened February 21, 1970. Customers old and new brought their warm wishes for the success of this unique landmark. In March 1982 Frank Goldstein passed away, their oldest son Harold Michael (called Michael) became general manager. For the next decade or so several members of the Goldstein family operated Henry’s. Bill and Naomi Maglaris and their family came to Henry’s in August of 2004. Bill grew up in the restaurant business and kept the Henry’s diner tradition running for 20 years, till March 2024, when Patricio Ortiz took ownership.
